Heavenly Heucheras!

As Autumn approaches and many plants start to fade, give some time and space for a Heuchera or two! Being evergreen, they are a perfect perennial to plant now to give some colour through the gloomiest of months!

We here at How Green have a thing for a Heuchera and their versatility is second to none. They work very well in pots and containers, either alone or used in a combination with other plants. They are equally at home in the border and are a great contrast with different coloured Heucheras or again with other plants.

As a general rule, they are a shade loving plant, which can be handy for those difficult spots in the garden that need livening up. There are however many varieties that are equally at home in full sun. The main draw is for the plants foliage, which not only come in many different colours, but also different shapes and textures. There are giant, miniature, scalloped as well as serrated edged leaves to give a depth of variety available.

The flowers should never be over-looked. In Spring and early Summer, a mass of foam-like flowers emerge above the foliage again in a range of colours. Most are white, but some have a tinge of pink whilst others are bright red.

This Autumn we are offering 46 different varieties, including some brand spanking new additions, as well as the trusted old favourites. To check out our extensive collection, come visit us at the Penshurst Craft Fair this coming weekend, (Friday 6th, Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th September) held in the grounds of Penshurst Place. We have a plant stand and show garden in conjunction with Chilstone of Fordcombe.

If you can’t make this weekend, why not pay the nursery a visit the following weekend for our last public open weekend of the 2013. We’re open Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th September and our entire stock can be viewed and purchased! Nearly 4000 different plants to choose from and delicious home made tea & cake will be served in our wonderful Summer house!

May Day Mayhem!

Last weekend saw the annual May bank holiday craft fair at Penshurst Place. A three day event, with hundreds of exhibitors showcasing their wares! How Green Nursery attended for the fifth year in succession alongside our good friends Chilstone of Tunbridge Wells. Together we join forces to create a mini show garden and also sell our goodies!

2013 see’s Chilstone run into it’s 60th year and their diamond anniversary. To honour this achievement, we created a diamond shaped garden, with a planting scheme to match!

The weather was fantastic, especially on the Sunday & Monday, with no rain and warm sunshine, bringing the crowds in their thousands. Bank holiday Monday, visitor numbers reached record proportions not only to the fair, but also Penshurst Place.

Our stock has caught up with the fantastic weather of late, so lot’s of colourful plants were on display, not only in the garden, but also for sale! We also sold a record number of plants, with the gardening public eager to get their gardens up to speed!

Our next outing is The Decorative Living Fair at Eridge on May 16th – come and see us there!

Topiary Hire: a Hassle Free Service!

For ten years now, we at How Green have been hiring out topiary for weddings, parties and exhibitions.

We use very high quality Bay tree standards sourced from nurseries in Belgium. For a one off special event, high impact, beautiful trees are a must. The photo below show a wedding at Penshurst Place this week, which utilised our topiary hire service.

We can decorate with battery powered LED lights, ribbons and all our pieces are potted into Chelsea lead look pots. The soil is then covered with grey slate, to give a very smart overall look.

Our Bay trees  look equally at home in a contemporary setting, stately home or a marquee. Our service includes delivery, set-up and collection leaving you nothing to worry about!

We also have a range of topiary at the nursery for sale.

We’ll have our usual plant display, this time in the form of a wildlife garden, with the help of stone guru’s Chilstone of Tunbridge Wells. You won’t be able to miss us, as we are the first stand you stumble across when entering the show!

The event starts on Friday and also runs through Saturday and Sunday. Come and say hello!

Mud Glorious Mud… or It’s a Wash Out!

Visitor numbers down by 30% due to bad weather.

Last week, How Green Nursery attended the Penshurst Craft Fair with show gardens and plant stand. But, with weeks of endless rain the showground resembled a mud bath. Our van became stuck in the mire and had to be pulled out by a tractor and that was before the show had even started!

Freezing temperatures, grey skies and heavy showers didn’t deter the folk who braved the elements to come and see us though! We received plenty of positive feedback for our ‘Fire & Ice’ garden in conjunction with Chilstone from Langton Green.

We are pleased to announce that we have confirmed a pitch at the Wealden Times Summer Fair at the wonderful Hole Park. More details will be announced nearer the time.
