Potters Garden wins the highest accolade!!
The last few weeks has been manic here at the nursery, with trade brisk and growing for gardens at RHS Malvern and Chelsea! If you check out last weeks blog, you’ll know we grew for the Dial a Flight sponsored ‘Potters Garden’ designed by Frankie and Emma from Nature Redesigned.
With the expert help from Frogheath Landscapes, the collective put together what was a magnificent effort in the Artisan garden category. So much so, the strict task-masters that are the RHS judges awarded the garden the top prize of a gold medal!! Not bad for Nature Redesigned and their first effort at Chelsea!!
I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot more of these guys in the future!
How Green supply plants for RHS Malvern garden
We’ve been very busy this season with growing plants for RHS show gardens. Our band of merry garden design customers have taken on the challenge of designing, building and planting at some of the countries most prestigious shows!
First up, our good friends Richard and Sam from Twigs garden design based in Sussex approached us to grow for their ‘A Fruity Story’ garden at Malvern. The concept of the garden was based around a realistic, fully functional garden that can inspire people to do the same at home! The emphasis being on cooking, with the installation of a beautiful brick fire kiln.
The planting also tied in nicely, with many herbs, vegetables and soft fruit that could be used directly in conjunction with any cooking done in the garden. Planting was not in the conventional way in lines, but blending in with herbaceous perennials and grasses. To soften the wonderful landscaping, Richard and his team used a wonderful pallet of shade loving plants to under-plant the stunning Betula and Acers.
They deservedly won a Silver-gilt medal which is a great achievement guys! With several celebrities including chef James Martin enjoying the garden and a slot on Gardeners World last Friday, I’m sure Twigs will go from strength to strength!
Next week, check out our post on how our growing for the Chelsea Flower Show went!
How quickly this season seems to be going!! With such good Spring weather and fantastic sales, it’s all been a bit of a blur!! Coupled with us growing for RHS Malvern and Chelsea Flower Shows, there’s never a dull moment here at the nursery!
Throw into the mix this week the Penshurst Craft Fair held within the wonderful grounds at Penshurst Place. The twice-annual event is a showcase for some of the best arts and crafts available to buy, all held under the same (marquee!) roof.
We, in conjunction with our good friends Chilstone of Fordcombe create a mini show garden and can be seen at the entrance to the show. Be inspired with our Spring planting combinations and some of the finest garden ornaments all hand made at their site locally.
An extra twist to our garden this year will be the addition of Nigel Hartfield, who will be demonstrating some stone engraving within the garden!!
The craft show runs for three days over the bank holiday, Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd & Monday 4th May.
For the second consecutive year, we here at How Green are growing for the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show!
Last year, we grew for Chelsea for the first time, for local designer Roger Platts. His centenary garden sponsored by M&G deservedly won a gold medal for it’s ambitious design, incorporating the many styles seen in the last hundred years.
The famous saying by British rower Steve Redgrave after winning his fifth Olympic medal has never been more apt – ‘you have my permission to shoot me if I ever step near a boat again!’ We said a similar thing last year after the very challenging weather we were up against growing for Roger! The plants were constantly moved inside, then out and took a huge amount of work to achieve the end result!
With this in mind, we decided to take a break from Chelsea growing! Then back in December, our great customers Francesca Murrell and Emma Page from Nature Redesigned announced that their plan for an artisan garden had been picked by the RHS! During that exciting meeting, it was decided, how could we possibly say no to growing the plants for their garden!
We are proud to announce we are growing extensively for Nature Redesigned and their Dial A Flight sponsored ‘Potters Garden’. The garden commemorates the 100th anniversary of the start of world war one and portrays an abandoned brick works after the men going to war. Follow our road to Chelsea Flower Show 2014 via Facebook, with weekly photos and updates starting next week – keep tuned!!
A very belated Happy New Year to all our customers old and new! The Year Ahead……….
How time flies! The Christmas festivities and holiday time flew by (as always!) and before we knew it, we’re all back at work and building for the 2014 season ahead. The elements have really stacked up against us the last few weeks, with high winds and torrential rain, the likes of which we haven’t seen in years!
Inclement weather is a challenge for any grower and we’ve certainly been up against it recently! The Christmas Eve storm created havoc with many pains of glass lost from our greenhouses and one of our older tunnels unable to hold on any longer! We’ve been busy with maintenance round the nursery and our brand new office/sales area is nearing completion. Our plants have all been divided and tidied up and we await our consignment of bare root perennials to be potted up.
Hot off the press, we have been approached to grow for another Chelsea show garden this year! With the success of growing for Roger Platts award winning garden last year, we are growing around 90% of the plants for one of the artisan gardens. Check out our website later in the week for a full feature on our road to Chelsea!
