Something a bit different: We grew for the Alan Partridge Sound Bath Garden – co-designed by actor and comedian Steve Coogan and Carey Garden Design, sponsored by Audible. A contemporary garden with absolutely beautiful planting, including swathes of grasses and perennials. So brilliantly executed that the RHS awarded a Gold medal, and it was only one point away from achieving a perfect score.
We had a wonderful day at Chelsea and really loved both Jo Thompson’s and Carey Garden Design’s Gold medal-winning gardens. Both very different gardens, stunningly executed in their landscaping, with exquisite planting. Gilver-gilt medal winning Zoe Claymore and The Wildlife Trust’s ‘Rainforest Garden was agonisingly just a few marks off attaining gold, however Silver-Gilt is still an amazing achievement. Congratulations to everyone involved. We thought all-round the quality of the show was high, and it was great to see the Pavilion busy with specialist nurseries
Orlaya grandiflora (laceflower), is a beautiful annual with lace-like foliage and a profusion of white, flat, umbellifer flowers. It flowers from June to October and is great for pollinating insects. Long lasting as a cut flower too. Height approx. 75cm.
We are proud to have grown for four show gardens this year. They are: The Wildlife Trust’s British Rainforest Garden designed by Zoe Claymore.Really great to be associated with such a good initiative, a mission to return rainforests to parts of the UK. Only 1% of this habitat remains. The design is a nod to an indigenous valley, with waterfall, stream and cool, temperate planting, including ferns, Bluebells and other wild flowers. Baptisia (False Indigo) have become very popular in recent years, with some groundbreaking breeding bringing more cultivars to the market. Baptisia flower for a long time, from May through to August and are great for pollinating insects. ‘Blueberry Sundae’ produces strikingly bright blue flowers to a height of 1m.
One of the best plants we’ve grown in recent years is Stipa lessingiana. We always get asked for Stipa tenuissima, which is a great plant for it’s tactile, feathery seed heads. However, it is a very short-lived grass, especially with the wet Winters we have been getting. Once the seed-heads get wet, they can form a horrible matted clump. Stipa lessingiana is very similar in appearance but is more rigid and stands up better in wet conditions. It also overwinters
