Spotlight on… Mecanopsis ‘Lingholm’

Mecanopsis are infamously tricky to grow in the south of England, but Mecanopsis ‘Lingholm’ is a very reliable cultivar. The glorious deep cobalt blue flowers of this Himalayan Poppy are held above the foliage with its distinctive rusty brown hairs.  Does well in rich, fertile soil and part shade. We grow them in 5 litre pots and are pleased to say we have plenty in stock at the moment.

Spotlight on… Fritillaria persica

Fritillaria persica are looking really great right now. This majestic flowering bulb has architecturally pleasing glaucus stems and foliage. Beautiful, brooding plum colour bell-shaped flowers are held on 90cm stems, making it one of the tallest Fritillarias.  Plant in full sun, well-drained soil.

Spotlight on… Narcissus

Spring is synonymous with Narcissus and we have some lovely potted varieties and some interesting and hard to find examples. Add a splash of colour to pots, containers, borders and meadows. Narcissus bulbocodium ‘Arctic Bells’ (above) is a relatively new variety with a profusion of creamy-yellow flowers that fade to white as they mature. Narcissus ‘Tete de Luxe’ is a charming miniature double-flowered daffodil, standing 15-20cm tall with vibrant yellow, multi-layered petals. Fritillaria raddeana is a very rare and unusual crown imperial featuring beautiful soft cream blooms, with a hint of lime as the flowers mature. It is fully hardy and can be used for naturalising in grass or borders. Growing to a height of 75cm, they look spectacular. Plant in part shade in well-drained soil.

Our Hamamelis are looking fantastic right now with some large specimens in 25 litre pots. Hamamelis ‘Arnold Promise’ has beautiful fragrant, spidery yellow flowers. A lovely shrub that can grow to 4m x 4m, it is suited to the border or woodland setting. The Autumn colour is also wonderful with vibrant shades of orange and yellow.
