Mecanopsis are infamously tricky to grow in the south of England, but Mecanopsis ‘Lingholm’ is a very reliable cultivar. The glorious deep cobalt blue flowers of this Himalayan Poppy are held above the foliage with its distinctive rusty brown hairs. Does well in rich, fertile soil and part shade. We grow them in 5 litre pots and are pleased to say we have plenty in stock at the moment.
Fritillaria persica are looking really great right now. This majestic flowering bulb has architecturally pleasing glaucus stems and foliage. Beautiful, brooding plum colour bell-shaped flowers are held on 90cm stems, making it one of the tallest Fritillarias. Plant in full sun, well-drained soil.
Spring is synonymous with Narcissus and we have some lovely potted varieties and some interesting and hard to find examples. Add a splash of colour to pots, containers, borders and meadows. Narcissus bulbocodium ‘Arctic Bells’ (above) is a relatively new variety with a profusion of creamy-yellow flowers that fade to white as they mature. Narcissus ‘Tete de Luxe’ is a charming miniature double-flowered daffodil, standing 15-20cm tall with vibrant yellow, multi-layered petals. Narcissus ‘Rip Van Winkle’ have greenish-yellow flowers that are packed full of pointed petals,
Is a rare, hardy evergreen perennial, known for its long-flowering season from December to April. It has really unusual star-shaped white flowers with narrow petals for a Hellebore, that fade to pale pink. Height 35cm x 45cm spread.
Something a bit different: We grew for the Alan Partridge Sound Bath Garden – co-designed by actor and comedian Steve Coogan and Carey Garden Design, sponsored by Audible. A contemporary garden with absolutely beautiful planting, including swathes of grasses and perennials. So brilliantly executed that the RHS awarded a Gold medal, and it was only one point away from achieving a perfect score.
We had a wonderful day at Chelsea and really loved both Jo Thompson’s and Carey Garden Design’s Gold medal-winning gardens. Both very different gardens, stunningly executed in their landscaping, with exquisite planting. Gilver-gilt medal winning Zoe Claymore and The Wildlife Trust’s ‘Rainforest Garden was agonisingly just a few marks off attaining gold, however Silver-Gilt is still an amazing achievement. Congratulations to everyone involved. We thought all-round the quality of the show was high, and it was great to see the Pavilion busy with specialist nurseries
