Autumn – Hillcroft Revisited!

Seven months after our extensive planting project at Caterham on the Hill, we paid the site a visit, to see how it looked! Back in March, we were approached by Caterham Parish Council to deliver a new planting scheme at Hillcroft Corner, in the middle of Caterham on the Hill high street. The brief was simple. They wanted all the old woody shrubs replaced with something that would be very low maintenance, no watering and would look great all year

Being evergreen, they are a perfect perennial to plant now to give some colour through the gloomiest of months! We here at How Green have a thing for a Heuchera and their versatility is second to none. They work very well in pots and containers, either alone or used in a combination with other plants. They are equally at home in

A New Venture!

Last week the hard working staff at How Green finished a project to rejuvenate a prominent bed in Caterham on the Hill in Surrey. Working with the town’s parish council, we scrubbed out the tired, old shrubs and bedding. The brief was a complicated one! A low maintenance, drought tolerant garden that has all year round interest, with the wow factor! Not a particulary easy remit!! The shape and layout of the existing bed did not need changing and in fact

Reflections on the Year that Was

It’s amazing to think another year has passed and never has the saying ‘how time flies’ been more relevant! This year has flown by! Looking back on 2012 it’s been a very difficult year in the horticultural world. The year started with great promise, with garden centre and garden designer sales very strong up to March. It was a month which saw temperatures in the mid-twenties and nursery staff in shorts and T-shirts. Our 30th anniversary season looked as though

Hoar Frost on the grasses at How Green Nursery

Working in a Winter Wonderland

This week the weather has taken a real turn as Britain is gripped with ‘The Beast From the East’! Sub-zero temperatures down to -7˚C has made life difficult at How Green. Bulbs frozen in the sand and perennials like blocks of ice, finding work for our staff has been hard! So the last couple of days we’ve undone the work shackles and started to make the nursery look all Christmasy! The tree has gone up in our tea hut and

Great Grasses at our Autumnal Nursery talk

Last week we welcomed back the Fordcombe Amateur Gardening Society to the nursery. The end of October can be a little tricky for seasonal interest, but with our grasses at their peak we made the most of them! Grasses can be so versatile and can be used in many aspects and situations. There are grasses for full sun and arid conditions, there are grasses for shade, for moist conditions (and marginal) and there are perennial and annual grasses. Plant them in the
